What makes a piece read as boho
Boho is less about a single item and more about ease: multiple strands at different lengths, uneven bead sizes, a mix of matte and polished surfaces, and metals that look handled rather than manufactured. Nothing is too symmetrical. The look is built from layers that you add gradually.
That is why the style pairs so naturally with earthy color — when the palette stays close to clay, sand, moss and stone, even a stack of bracelets feels calm instead of busy.
Krobo beads and recycled glass
African Krobo beads are the heart of many of our pieces. They are made from recycled glass, hand-shaped and fired, and historically used as trading beads across the continent. Each one carries slight irregularities in shape, color and weight — the marks of handwork that machine glass never has.
Paired with stone, they give a bracelet a rhythm you can see: a matte black bead, then a flash of color, then the warmth of tiger's eye or copper.
Layering without looking cluttered
The trick with boho layering is to keep the materials talking to each other.
- Pick two or three colors and repeat them across wrist and neck.
- Vary scale: one chunky bracelet next to two fine ones reads better than three of the same size.
- Anchor the look with one solid piece — a wide cuff, a single long strand — so the layering has a center.
- Work with the neckline: open collars suit a short layered strand, high necks suit one longer piece.
Wearing handmade with intention
Boho style has a history, and much of it runs through African beadwork and craft traditions. Wearing it well means knowing where the materials come from and valuing the hands that made them — buying small-batch, asking who made a piece, and treating it as something to keep rather than replace.
Every Brownhaze piece is designed and strung by hand in our Los Angeles studio, and part of what we do supports foster youth through our craft-training program. That is the part of the style we care most about: jewelry with a story you can actually trace.
